Gallbladder removal, also called cholecystectomy, is commonly advised for painful gallstones, repeated inflammation or certain gallbladder abnormalities. It is often performed laparoscopically, although the safest route depends on inflammation, scarring and anatomy.
Bile duct surgery may be required for injury, obstruction, cysts, strictures or tumours. The procedure can involve removing the affected segment and reconstructing drainage so bile can flow into the intestine.
The Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is a major operation generally used for selected conditions around the head of the pancreas, lower bile duct or nearby duodenum. It removes the affected structures and reconnects the digestive tract. Careful evaluation is essential because recovery and nutritional needs can be substantial.
Liver surgery may remove a defined part of the liver containing a tumour, cyst or damaged tissue. Because the liver has a complex blood supply, planning usually includes detailed imaging and an assessment of how much healthy liver will remain.
Pancreatic surgery varies with the part of the gland involved. Options may include removal of the head, body or tail of the pancreas. A pancreatic surgeon in Bangalore also considers whether nearby structures are involved and how surgery may affect digestion or blood glucose.
Not every pancreatic cyst needs surgery. Size, growth, symptoms and imaging features help determine whether monitoring, further testing or removal is appropriate. For tumours, the plan depends on their type, location, stage and relationship to nearby vessels.
Laparoscopic surgery uses a camera and slender instruments passed through small incisions. It may be suitable for gallbladder surgery and selected liver or pancreatic procedures. The decision depends on the disease, previous surgery and technical complexity.
Robotic assistance gives the surgeon a magnified three-dimensional view and instruments with a wide range of controlled movement. It can support precision in selected operations, but the surgeon remains in control throughout. Robotic surgery is recommended only when it offers a suitable route for that patient and procedure.
Open surgery may be safer for extensive disease, difficult anatomy, major blood-vessel involvement, severe scarring or an emergency. A minimally invasive operation may also need to be converted to an open procedure if this is the safest way to complete treatment.
The consultation covers symptoms, previous abdominal operations, medicines, allergies and existing illnesses. Examination helps identify tenderness, jaundice, weight loss or other relevant signs.
Tests may assess blood count, liver and kidney function, clotting, blood glucose and other markers relevant to the suspected condition.
Ultrasound, CT, MRI or specialised bile-duct imaging may be used to define the problem and plan liver surgery in Bangalore or another HPB procedure.
Upper endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP or tissue sampling may be advised in selected cases. These tests are not required for every patient.

Length of stay ranges from a short admission after straightforward gallbladder surgery to a longer recovery after major liver or pancreatic surgery.
Eating usually resumes in stages. Some patients need dietary changes, enzyme replacement or closer glucose monitoring, particularly after pancreatic surgery.
Pain relief is adjusted so the patient can breathe deeply, walk and rest comfortably. Report pain that is worsening or not controlled.
Walking starts early, while lifting and strenuous work resume gradually. The timeframe depends on the operation, healing and type of work.
Follow-up reviews wounds, nutrition, test results and recovery. Fever, increasing abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, jaundice or wound discharge should be reported promptly.
